Shelly Martinez
I started as the oldest intern for WCTY Jimmy and Karen in the morning. As their intern, I took on the role of Danger Girl, who took on scary tasks under Jimmy’s direction. My first assignment was to collect socks from working men at Home Depot on National Sockless Day, give an award to the best school bus driver who almost had me arrested, walking on hot coals, and drinking polluted water at a drinking fountain at a local high school. Sensing my audacity, Hall Communications hired me as a fill-in receptionist and DJ, broadcasting live at baseball remotes at Dodd Stadium for KOOL101. Soon, I was doing remotes, parades, and charity events, and Saturday afternoons on WCTY and tracking overnights on KOOL101. 2004: Stu Bryer offered me an on- air shift on WICH AM 1310 from 2-4PM which was short lived but gave me the on-air experience and confidence that I truly needed. When Karen Kowalski left in November 2005, I was offered to co-host the Morning Show with Jimmy Lehn. Jimmy and I have been nominated twice for an ACM, and one CMA small market radio personalities awards. We have also been the Reader’s Choice Best radio personalities for five years in a row!
