Mick Jagger once sang, “What a drag it is getting old,” but well into his golden years, the Rolling Stones frontman seems to be as active and vibrant as ever. Jagger celebrates his 75th birthday today, having just wrapped up a hugely successful European tour with his legendary band.
Few music stars have made a greater cultural mark on the world than Jagger. He was one of rock’s first bad boys, whose kinetic stage moves, drawling vocals and cocky attitude drove fans into a frenzy as The Rolling Stones established themselves as the rebellious counterparts of The Beatles.
Above all, there’s the music Jagger has created with his band mate and songwriting partner, Keith Richards. The songs the duo penned for the Stones over the past 56 years include the classics “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” “Get Off of My Cloud,” “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” “Honky Tonk Women,” “Sympathy for the Devil,” “Gimme Shelter,” “Wild Horses,” “Tumbling Dice,” “Angie,” “Miss You” and “Start Me Up,” to name only a few.
Most recently, The Stones released a blues covers album, Blue & Lonesome, in December 2016 that peaked at #4 on the Billboard 200 chart garnered the group a Grammy for the Best Traditional Blues Album.
Beyond his work with The Stones, Jagger’s released a few solo albums, and last year issued a pair of singles: “England Lost” and “Gotta Get a Grip.” He also scored hit duets with The Jacksons and the late David Bowie in the 1980s. In addition, Mick has dabbled in acting, film and TV producing. In 2003, he received a prestigious knighthood in his U.K. homeland.
What’s next for Jagger? Well, according to numerous reports, he’s been writing songs for a new Rolling Stones album, and the band is expected to line up more tour dates, too.
