Kanye West’s father, Ray West, is suffering from prostate cancer, People magazine reports.
“Kanye’s dad was diagnosed with cancer and is already receiving treatment,” a source from Keeping Up with the Kardashians tells People.com. “He seems to be responding well to the treatment and everyone is hopeful he will be okay.”
“Kanye doesn’t really talk about it,” the source continues. “You can tell it’s something that’s very difficult for him.”
Ray West divorced Kanye’s mother, Donda West, when Kanye was three years old. Donda passed away in 2007 at the age of 58 following complications from cosmetic surgery.
Kanye wrote about his relationship with his father in the song “Champion” from his 2007 album, Graduation.
He rapped, “I ain’t saying we was from the projects/But every time I wanna layaway or deposit/My dad’lll say, ‘When you see clothes, close your eyelids’/We was sort of like Will Smith and his son/In the movie, I ain’t talking ’bout the rich ones.”
West was referring to Smith’s 2006 movie, The Pursuit of Happyness, co-starring Will’s son Jaden Smith. The film is the true story of entrepreneur Chris Gardner, who went from being homeless to being a successful Wall Street broker.
