Our series of virtual concerts continues this Friday and next with a virtual happy hour thrown in for good measure.
Tomorrow night you can tune in to WCTY.com or our Facebook page to hear songs from the Desert City Ramblers. The Ramblers feature Brian McComus who had two popular country hits in 2001 and 2002. McComus is back with his singing and playing friends to form a southern rock country band reminiscent of the Eagles and Marshall Tucker. The name for the band was inspired while thinking about those small desert cities we hear about in songs like “Peaceful Easy Feeling” and “Take it Easy”.
Their current single is called “Hillbilly Rolling Stone” and it is zooming up the charts, already in the top 40. The WCTY virtual happy hour with the Desert City Ramblers is Friday June 12th at 6pm.
On Friday June 19th I am excited to have an old friend of mine joining me for the WCTY virtual happy hour. Back when I was working in Lake Charles Louisiana and Beaumont Texas I happened to meet a singer, songwriter named Brad Brinkley. Brad was pursuing a career in country music at the same time as Beaumont natives Mark Chesnutt, Tracy Bird, Clay Walker and Zona Jones were charting number one songs.
Brad Brinkley was playing every night at a club called the Longhorn Club in Vidor Texas. The huge country bar would host artists like Garth Brooks, George Strait and Diamond Rio downstairs and Brad’s local band upstairs. Brad’s band featured his father Emmitt on fiddle and female vocals from his sister Shelly.
I was the local DJ who hosted all of the big shows as well as a Friday night live radio show. Brad and I became close friends and he sang for me and my wife at our wedding. I was also able to help him with my contacts in Nashville. Brad was signed to a publishing company, and hosted his own television show on the RFD network. His single “Table for Two” was a top 30 song on the Texas charts.
It will be a lot of fun for me to catch up with Brad and talk about all the things he is still doing in the music business. Brad and his sister Shelly will join us on Friday June 19th at 6pm on WCTY.com and on our Facebook pages. Dubbed the human jukebox, just try to stump him with a country song request.
WCTY virtual happy hours are every Friday night at 6pm for as long as it’s impossible to attend country music concerts and events.
